The Drikung Kagyu tradition

The Kagyu school, one of the four great schools of Tibetan Buddhism, is also known as the “oral transmission lineage”, which reaches back in unbroken succession to Buddha Vajradhara. Among the four principal students of Gampopa (1079-1153), it divided into four streams.

One of these students was Phagmodrupa (1100-1170), and his principal student Jigten Sumgön (1143-1217) became his successor and later the founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage.

Since the 17th century, two brothers have always led the Drikungpas. To this day, the reincarnations of «the elder and the younger brother», the Chetsang and Chungtsang Rinpoches, are the heads of the lineage.

At present, the 36th Drikung Kyabgön Chungtsang Rinpoche and the 37th Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche jointly lead the lineage.
